STATEWIDE (October 30, 2012) - Those looking for a way to give back this Thanksgiving can consider providing a family in need with a Thanksgiving dinner by donating a turkey. In addition to turkeys, Feeding South Dakota is also requesting donations of boxed mashed potatoes, gravy mixes, canned vegetables, and pies to create a traditional thanksgiving feast for individuals in need at their Pierre and Sioux Falls facilities. Through a generous grant from AT&T, Feeding South Dakota in Rapid City will provide boxed mashed potatoes, gravy mixes, canned vegetables, and pies to create a traditional thanksgiving feast for individuals in need.
Feeding South Dakota is holding its 2nd Annual Statewide Turkey Drive from November 5-9. Turkeys and Thanksgiving fixings will be collected at all three Food Bank sites across the state: Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City, as well as the Sioux Falls Food Pantry.
Although Feeding South Dakota has a history of collecting and distributing turkeys during the Thanksgiving holiday, the organization formalized the drive last year raising enough money and collecting enough turkeys to feed close to 2,500 families. This Thanksgiving holiday, Feeding South Dakota hopes to provide 5,000 families with ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
“Thanksgiving is a time for all of us to reflect on all of the blessings we have, and this is a great opportunity to give thanks and to give back to others in need,” said Matt Gassen, Executive Director of Feeding South Dakota.
Feeding South Dakota distributes 12.2 million pounds of food annually, feeding over 100,000 individuals in need in all 66 of South Dakota’s counties. Nearly half of the individuals served by Feeding South Dakota are infants and children.
To contribute as an individual, family, with friends, or as a workplace, bring turkeys and ingredients to make traditional Thanksgiving side dishes, such as stuffing, green bean casserole, or pumpkin pie, to one of three Food Bank facilities. Or, for $20, Feeding South Dakota can purchase a turkey and the ingredients to make the side dishes for one family. Every donation will make a traditional Thanksgiving meal possible for a hungry child, senior, and family in need.
About Feeding South Dakota
Feeding South Dakota is the state’s largest charitable hunger relief organization whose mission is to eliminate hunger in South Dakota with distribution centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City. In 2011, Feeding South Dakota secured and distributed 12.2 million pounds of quality nutritious donated and purchased food, along with other surplus items through a network of over 450 charitable organizations across the state. These organizations then provide this food to individuals who are “food insecure” through on-site feeding programs, emergency food pantries, after school programs and mass distribution programs.
