back to listKEVN Black Hills Fox - May 13, 2010
The Community Food Bank distributed about three-and-a-half million pounds of food in Western South Dakota last year. The Food Bank is hard at work again this year, but now under a different name. The Community Food Banks of South Dakota are now known as Feeding South Dakota. The manager of the Rapid City site says the new name more accurately reflects the work they do. Monica Leitheiser says, "We merged with the Sioux Falls food bank in 2004. And at that time, we took the name Community Food Banks. Now, we're doing so many different programs. We have a pantry in Rapid, a pantry in Sioux Falls. We're doing about 4,000 backpacks in the state of South Dakota. And we are opening a branch in Pierre to distribute food to pantries and hunger relief organizations." Leitheiser says the demand for their services has gone up over the past couple of years because of the economy.
