Feeding SD to feed 5,000 families this Thanksgivingback to list
By Courtney Collen
Feeding South Dakota is launching its second annual Turkey Drive for families in need across the state of South Dakota. It extends through November 9th.
Feeding SD wants to feed 5,000 families a traditional Thanksgiving meal, this year, that's up 3,000 from their goal last year.
"Every year it's important to think about the Thanksgiving tradition and the importance of giving back. There are people in need," Development Director Kerri DeGraff said.
Kerri DeGraff says in just the last year, the local Food Pantry has seen an 11% increase in people needing food. 50% of them are children.
That's why, this holiday season - and this week in particular - it's vital to help others have a happy one.
"We know Thanksgiving is the time at the end of the month, families will be struggling to meet their food budgets. Many families without additional support would not have the chance to sit down and have a nice Thanksgiving dinner. I think it's a wonderful way for us all to continue that legacy and meet the increasing needs of our community," DeGraff said.
Iva Laudermith is a pastor from churches in Parker and Hurley who says many of us don't seem to think there are a lot of hungry people here. But she knows first hand there are.
"There's always a need, people who are worse off than we are. It's a joy to be able to give," Iva Laudermith said.
"We want to do our best to provide a traditional meal to those families. We hope we have a good response this year and we're able to meet our increasing demand and need," DeGraff said.
There are a number of ways YOU can help from donating a turkey, the fixings or just $20 for Feeding SD to buy the meal.
