Hunger Facts

You have heard the “facts” a thousand times. Numbers and statistics of hungry people, starving families, and children with empty stomachs.

The problem? Those are not just numbers and statistics. Those numbers describe REAL people who are truly suffering from a lack of food. REAL people suffering from a lack of resources. REAL people suffering from a lack of hope.

At Feeding South Dakota, we are not trying to overwhelm you with numbers or statistical data. We just want you to know how many South Dakotans really do need our help.

More importantly, we want you to know how many South Dakotans need YOUR help. So read these facts and remember: these are REAL people that you can help by donating to Feeding South Dakota today.

1 out of every 7 individuals in South Dakota lives at or below the poverty line

South Dakota is a proud state. Sometimes we find it hard to believe how many of our state’s residents live below the poverty line. But whether we want to believe it or not does not change the fact that it is true. If a woman cannot provide food for her family, she comes to Feeding South Dakota. If a man is unable to find work, we can help him relieve his hunger. As proud a state as South Dakota might be, sometimes people need help. We are here to be that help. We are here to fight that hunger. We are here to feed South Dakota.

Combined, the Sioux Falls and Rapid City Pantries serve over 65,000 people each year

The Sioux Falls Food Pantry alone provides emergency food and personal care items to over 24,000 people each year, while the Rapid City Pantry served over 41,000.

Almost half of the individuals our food pantries serve are children and infants.

No child should ever go hungry. But the sad truth is that almost half of the food pantry’s recipients are hungry children. With your donations, you can help us change this. Whether you provide a BackPack Program donation or simply give a general donation to Feeding South Dakota, YOU can make a difference. You can put food in a child’s empty stomach. You can put hope in a child’s heart.

Feeding South Dakota provides food for an estimated 100,000 people every year.

The need is real. People across this state come to Feeding South Dakota looking for help. Thousands of real human beings hoping to fill their stomachs and put an end to their hunger. As a hunger relief organization, our goal is to fight hunger and help these 100,000+ individuals. With your help, we will succeed.
